The Role of Bedia Women in Cultural and Historical Contexts

by Pratiksha Sangwan, PhD Candidate, Banasthali Vidyapith, India & Researcher, Gender and Identity Student Research Committee of IAPSS

On Tuesday, 15th of August, 2024, at 19:45 IST

This lecture will explore the complex structure of the Bedia community, highlighting the close relationship that exists among this community’s prostitute culture, gender norms, and history. The Bedia community, historically engaged in distinctive customs, has developed a distinctive societal framework that is interconnected with the responsibilities that women are allotted. It will trace the historical development of the Bedia community, looking at how outside factors and cultural traditions have influenced their social standards. Through an examination of the development of gender roles from ancient norms to modern dynamics, it will clarify the complex relationship between cultural legacy and duties that are allocated to Bedia women. The study will examine how economic conditions, familial dynamics, and societal norms combine to define Bedia women’s roles, including their prostitution. The goal of this lecture is to promote a broad viewpoint that eliminates prejudices and encourages thoughtful debates on the intricate connections between Bedia history, culture, gender roles, and women’s involvement in prostitution.
