2018 | Singapore: Rethinking Development

The Academic Convention 2018 in Singapore – A general description

The International Association for Political Science Students is thrilled to announce the Academic Convention 2018 in Singapore. From November 19 to 23, students from all over the world will gather to discuss the convention theme, “Rethinking Development: Innovative Policies for Social and Economic Advancement.” This year, we are partnering with the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF), an inter-governmental organisation that aims to strengthen relations between Asia and Europe. An annual event with an expected attendance of +150, the Convention is one of the largest international conferences for students of political science, international relations, and related disciplines.

What can you expect?

The Academic Convention 2018 will bring together a multiplicity of experts from academia, civil society institutions, the media, policy-makers, and think tanks. In student panels, panelists will present their research (concerning the convention theme) to an audience of fellow students, after which there will be interactive discussions. Participants will also have the chance to learn valuable skills in the 9 research workshops we’ll have to offer, in addition to an Oxford-style debate and 6 much-anticipated lectures. In the evenings, a social program will allow participants to relax, network, and explore the city!

We look forward to welcoming you to Singapore in November 2018!

Due to popular demand, we have extended our deadline to register. Be sure to register by October 31 to secure your spot at the Convention!

The Event

Program Overview

The IAPSS Academic Convention 2018 aims at both providing students of political science, international relations and related disciplines a platform to present their work and research within a variety of student panels, and bringing you together with experts from the academia, politics, the media and civil society to discuss and examine topics and issues around the theme “Rethinking Development: Innovative Policies for Social and Economic Advancement” in depth.

This year we will be expecting around 150 participants, with 80 panelists in 21 student-run panels. The first day (November 19) is an arrival and registration day, with a networking event in the evening. The following days (November 20 – 23) are divided into time slots for student panels, lectures, and research workshops. Three to five students will present their research and work in form of short paper presentations at each panel, facilitated by a panel chair, a panel discussant and the audience present.

At a number of high profile lectures, we will bring you together with leading political scientists of our time, in an open atmosphere enabling both the speaker and the audience to discuss the topic of the lectures freely and without limits of thinking. In the morning to afternoon sessions, a wide range of events is scheduled, such as roundtables with ambassadors. A highly interactive environment will enable you and the academic guests to elaborate on concepts, theories, and arguments in depth.

The academic program will be supplemented by a variety of social events, enabling you to relax in the evenings and meet fellow students and the organisers in an informal setting.

About

Note that the information below is preliminary – final guidelines will be provided in October. Each paper presentation will consist of a presentation by the paper presenter, the discussant’s reply and a Q&A session with the audience.

Panels featuring three panelists will be structured (as per paper presented) as follows:

  • 12 minutes presentation;
  • 3 minutes discussion by the discussant;
  • 15 minutes Q&A with the audience

Panels featuring four panelists will be structured (as per paper presented) as follows:

  • 10 minutes presentation;
  • 2,5 minutes discussion by the discussant;
  • 10 minutes Q&A with the audience

All panels are limited to 90 minutes each. Please check the number of paper presenters in your panel and adapt your presentation according to the scheme above. All paper presenters, discussants and chairs are requested to be at the venue of the panel at least 15 minutes before the panel’s opening. Presenting a paper with one or more co-authors? Bear in mind the time structure above is per paper presented, not per presenter.

Provided Technical Facilities

All rooms are equipped with presentation facilities (fixed data projectors). You are kindly suggested to prepare a visual presentation underlining your discourse. Please bring a USB flash drive with the respective file(s) to the panel, best if in both .ppt and .pdf file types at least 15 minutes prior to the panel’s opening.

How to be a good Panelist

  • Keep to time. You will be allocated between 9 and 12 minutes of time (according to the total number of paper presenters in your panel) and if you go over the limit, it will be taken from the time of your co-panelists.
  • Structure your presentation so that the audience has the time to ask you questions afterwards.
  • Prepare your speech beforehand. You do not need to read directly from the paper but hint-cards are always useful.
  • If you write down your speech, make sure you have leeway time-wise. Speakers reading directly from the paper very often underestimate the time they will need for presentation.
  • If you run out of time, you will be cut off mid-presentation. No exceptions.
  • You have the option to use a laptop and a projector to display your figures, charts, or the summary of your paper. Be cautious with its use. Do not merely read what is written behind you – that is not presenting. The projector is an addendum not the core of your presentation.
  • Be precise and concise. You are presenting your research results, not making a political speech. Keep in mind that your audience is smart.
  • Read the papers of your colleagues. It is polite to prepare at least one question for each of your co-panelist and give them a proper feedback. Your work does not end with finishing your paper, the key to a successful academic panel is interaction among its participants.

In addition to their active participation in the discussions and/or their paper presentations, participants to the IAPSS Academic Convention 2018 can also apply for the positions of Chair and/or Discussant of a panel. To be eligible, an applicant for Chair and/or Discussant positions must have registered for the Academic Convention, either as a paper presenter or as an observer. To apply, please visit this online formSelected Chairs and Discussants will be announced together with the programme for student panels on October 20, 2018.

How to be a good Panel Chair

  • You must read the papers in your panel carefully, and prepare questions.
  • Start your panel exactly on time whenever possible.
  • No need to introduce yourself or anyone else at length. At most, say people’s names and institutional affiliations. Let them introduce their papers themselves.
  • Let the panelists speak in the order listed on the programme unless they request otherwise – for technical reasons, for example.
  • Keep each panelist to the time allotted. This is the most important part of the role of the panel chair. Divide the entire session evenly between all panelists. If one person goes over the time limit, they are cutting directly into of the time of the other panelists, and that must be avoided. Give people a subtle warning when they are close to time (show them on a piece of paper or on fingers ‘5, 2, 1 minute(s)’). Once they are out of time, give them notice. If they do not stop, you will need to be bold and ask them out loud to wrap up.
  • Take questions from the audience immediately after individual presentations. The Q&A should comprise at least one fourth of the time allocated to one panelist. If there are lots of questions, try to avoid asking any yourself, however be ready just in case the audience goes silent too soon.
  • Do not allow the audience to go off on a lengthy tangent, you may need to interrupt them to refocus the discussion.
  • Make sure the session finishes on time. People want their cup of coffee/a toilet break, etc. and they can always continue the debate over coffee if they care that much.
  • Always end the session by inviting the audience to thank the presenters (round of applause).

How to be a good Panel Discussant

As a discussant at IAPSS events, you serve two different needs:

  • Your first and most important responsibility is to help the audience understand the papers better. You must read the papers carefully, take time to understand their contributions, strengths and weaknesses, and what the audience needs to know about them.
  • Your second responsibility is to the authors. What are your reactions to the papers and why? What can the authors do to improve the paper? Learning how to read other papers with the critical eye of a good discussant will help you to learn how to write papers that appeal to the profession.

Review all papers through the following steps:

  • Briefly summarise the paper’s main message and its contribution.
  • Provide an assessment of the paper: does it make its case convincingly?
  • Suggest constructive ways to improve the paper.
  • Highlight the relevance of the paper to academia and society.
  • Stimulate conversation among the audience by posing questions for discussion.

2017 | Bremen: Truth and Politics

IAPSS Autumn Convention 2017

Truth and Politics

September 13–17 in Bremen, Germany

The International Association for Political Science Students launches its Call for Papers for the IAPSS Autumn Convention 2017 in Bremen; one of the most iconic cities in Germany. This is one of the largest international conferences for students of Political Science, International Relations and related disciplines, organized every selected year: this year in partnership with the University of Bremen.

The Topic

The relationship between truth and politics has puzzled students of politics for centuries. Does truth in politics necessarily lose its importance? Or are there different ‘kinds’ of politics, whereby in some truth plays a central role, while in others it is sidelined by an effort to reach and attain power? Alternatively, should the relationship be approached through exploring the concept of truth, instead of politics, possibly revealing that objective truths are unreachable in the societal world and to a lesser or greater extent depend on interactions between and interpretations of the actors involved?

The analysis of the role of truth in politics lies at the heart of any endeavour about the meaning(s) of politics. In political theory, the inquiry dates back at least to Machiavelli, with scholars debating the many interpretations of his work, conventionally considered to justify lying and manipulation for a certain political purpose. Social science methodologists are concerned with the (im)possibility of objectivity in social research and with new ways how to increase the reliability and validity of their scientific outcomes.

Political communication research faces the dynamically changing trends in campaigning, for which the year 2016 provided the two most visible examples of the US presidential elections and the referendum on Brexit. The largely unexpected outcomes of these events also pose a challenge for students of political behaviour, challenged by the strengthening discourse on post-factual or post-truth politics. The seemingly decreasing importance of debates based on factually correct and justified reasoning poses a question of to what extent populist strategies are part of the problem or, to the contrary, a possible solution to the ‘hollowing and backsliding’ of democratic governments in some countries and regions around the globe.

Furthermore, those working on political institutions face the need to (re)examine the relevance of various kinds of rules in navigating political actions. Those who care most about the individual and her fundamental human rights have to address what kind(s) of deficiencies of human rights protection could the deconstruction of rules bring about. Truth(s) are of no less importance for public policy analysts and practitioners, as to determine how the (in)correctness of information available can influence the design and implementation of policies in various fields.

These are just some of the puzzles that fall under the umbrella of the relationship between truth and politics, demonstrating that more attention is needed to examine the basic premises we base our research on, regardless of the specific field and theoretical and methodological traditions, and thus see how, if at all, is the Millian ‘search for truth’ possible and relevant in the contemporary world.

Call for Papers

The IAPSS Autumn Convention 2017 seeks to establish an academic discussion about how politics in its various forms and manifestations relates to truth in a both historical and contemporary perspective. We welcome papers from undergraduate, graduate and PhD students, as well as from junior scholars from different academic perspectives such as comparative politics, international relations, international political economy, political theory, security studies, public policy and administration, regional and area studies as well as political psychology and behavior studies, and international law, among others.

Guidelines for Paper Submissions

Please send us your abstract of no more than 250 words by submitting the online form here. This form also includes the name of the author(s), the title of the paper, key words, home university, and e-mail address. Abstracts should be submitted by 15 July 2017. Selected candidates for student panels will be informed by 25 July 2017.

Full papers should be submitted via the available online form by 31 August 2017.

Social Events

To quote Franz Kafka: “Prague never lets you go… this dear little mother has sharp claws“. A never sleeping city, the capital of Czech Republic is one of the beautifully emerging and prosperous metropolises from the former Warsaw Pact states – where old Christian and Jewish quarters meet post-socialist suburbs, where a young creative crowd attends the oldest university north of the European Alps, and where decisive scenes happened just before the fall of the Berlin wall.

Prague offers uncounted cultural and social events and venues to enjoy your time in the city as much as possible. The Convention’s social programme will include a festive Opening Reception (Day 1) and a vibrant Convention Party (Day 4). A Bar Night and a Brewery Night will be held on Day 2 and 3 to bring everyone together in a joyful atmosphere, to continue the debates of the day and to enjoy Prague’s unique flair with ice-cold Czech beer.

Find out about all social events featured here.

Travel Recommendations

Prague is a well connected city in the heart of Europe. Dozens of both regular and low-cost carriers provide cheap air tickets to the city’s main airport, Vaclav Havel International. Other nearby airports include Brno (Czech Republic), Dresden, Nuremberg and Munich (all Germany), Vienna (Austria) and Bratislava (Slovakia). If you wish to avoid air travel, multiple international and domestic train and bus connections are on offer for very affordable fares. The English website of the German Railways provides an easy-to-navigate search for available train connections, while Eurolines and Megabus are reliable providers of international bus connections. We recommend to book your transportation earlier as ticket prices might rise quickly.

Prague has one of the best public transportation systems in Europe. The metro, trams and buses are used by two thirds of Prague’s population and cover the majority of the city and its outskirts. If you’re staying for the entire duration of the Convention, we recommend you to buy a tourist pass that will enable you to use any type of mass transport as many times as you want within the time period for which your pass is valid. Find an overview of available passes here.

Accommodation Recommendations

Prague offers a large variety of uncounted lodging options, with cheap hostels offering single beds in dormitories as well as separate rooms, medium-range and high-end hotels, but also private accommodation as well as hundreds of Couchsurfing and AirBnB options – the latter especially interesting for smaller and larger groups .

Since Prague is a well-visited city around the year, we recommend to arrange your accommodation the earliest possible to enjoy the best offers and deals.

All selected panelists were eligible for travel grants. The grant distribution was solely based on panelists’ expenses including costs for travel, accommodation, visa and your ticket.

Theme: “New Threats to Security”

The understanding of the concept of security has changed in the past decades in both the developed and the developing world. States and non-state actors have followed different paths in the development of national, regional and global security. Transformative waves are expressed in revolutionary movements, domestic, transnational, and interstate conflicts. As the world has become more complex and interdependent, new threats to security have emerged, such as cyber threats, asymmetric warfare, failed states, climate change, economic fragility, public health issues, and population displacement. These threats prompt the need for a new conceptualization of security.

The IAPSS Autumn Convention 2015 in Prague aims to bring together students, scholars and experts from across the globe and across political science and its related disciplines to discuss the challenges these new threats pose.

written by the IAPSS Executive Committee | October 29th, 2014

Only a few days have gone by since the IAPSS Autumn Convention 2014 ended in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. The IAPSS Executive Committee is back at its desks and is happy to present you with a few selected stories and photographs revolving around IAPSS’ second largest political science convention in 2014. Need inspirations to come to our next large-scale event, the IAPSS World Congress 2015 in London? Check out the recap below and let yourself be inspired.

Over 220 participants from almost 50 different countries met at Radboud University in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, to attend the IAPSS Autumn Convention 2014, organized by IAPSS and the Dutch student association ismus. After an empowering welcome speech by Steffen Westerburger, head of the Local Organizing Committee, the conference was festively opened with a keynote on “Transitional Justice” by Assoc. Prof. Anja Mihr from the Hague Institute for Global Justice and Utrecht University. Right afterwards, the first participants were given the chance to present their papers at student panels with topics ranging from “Human Rights Norm Advancement” to “The Enforcement of Prosecution by International Law Institutions”.

After a variety of lectures and student panels following throughout the afternoon, Day One was festively closed with a reception held in Nijmegen’s City Hall, with addresses by representatives of the Nijmegen City Council, Radboud University’s Rector Prof. Theo Engelen, IAPSS President Philipp Aepler and the Local Organizing Committee.

Day 2 | October 21st: Meeting former Dutch Prime Minister Dries van Agt

Day Two of the IAPSS Autumn Convention 2014 was started off by three distinguished expert panels. For this, IAPSS and ismus invited the former Dutch Prime Minister Dries van Agt to speak about the Isreali-Palestinian conflict, his work and anticipations on the conflict’s further development. Prof. Michael Pugh from hte University of Bradford, UK, continued the morning programme with a thought-provoking lecture on the state of economic rights, where he spoke about LGBT rights as well as labour rights. The lunch break was followed by another round of student panels, only to be rounded off by a short presentation about Radboud University’s very own Master’s programmes.

During the evening time slot, Prof. Dr. Marcel Wissenburg, co-chair of the Department of Political Science at Radboud University, outlined his research on the question, whether animal rights are human rights (by the way, his answer is “yes”) and involved the attendants into a vivid discussion. The evening featured the first documentary evening taking place at the cultural center De Lindenberg. Following the screening of the moving documentary “5000 Roebel” and an expert panel featuring the documentary’s director Kris van der Veen as well as Joyce Hamilton of ILGA Europe and Assist. Prof. Anna van der Vleuten of Radboud University, the crowd got ready for an early morning trip to The Hague for a full-day excursion to the city’s international law institutions.

Day 3 | October 22nd: Excursion to ICJ, ICC and the Dutch Foreign Ministry

Embarking on a journey to The Haag, the seat of the Royal Dutch Government and a series of international law courts, at 07:15am (!) the participants had the chance to take part in two out of four scheduled events: lectures at the International Criminal Court, the International Court of Justice and the Dutch Foreign Ministry or attending a Masterclass on “Human Rights and Human Development” by Prof. Jan Pronk, the Netherlands former Minister for International Development and UN Envoy to Sudan. The Hague – the International City of Human Rights – offered 220 participants the chance to witness the functioning of its key institutions in an in-depth manner.

After returning to Nijmegen, the British film director Callum Macrae presented his challenging documentary No Fire Zone addressing the atrocities commited by the Sri Lankan government at the end of the country’s civil war in 2008/09.

Day 4 | October 23rd: Human Rights Institutions and Closure of the Academic Conference

The very last day of the IAPSS Autumn Conference 2014 was started off with three expert panels on the “Shelter City Initiative” of the City of Nijmegen, “International LGBT Rights” and “Current Trends in Migration Policies”. Prof. Janneke Gerards, head of Radboud University’s Department of European and International Law took over presenting the work and institutional set-up of the European Court of Human Rights. With her insightful lecture, she gave the participants a detailed overview on the working processes of the institution and the relevance of the Court’s work for citizens of the European Union.

The evening was rounded off with the traditional Oxford Style Show Debate, where participants, IAPSS representatives and local organisers alike could show off their debating skills while defending (or not defending) the notion of “The Universality of Human Rights”. Following two powerful talks by IAPSS President Philipp Aepler and the Local Organising Committee’s Chair Steffen Westerburger, the crowed was invited to an exquisite farewell dinner at De Vasim – one of Nijmegen’s leading cultural venues.

Day 5 | October 24th: 19th IAPSS General Assembly

Traditionally closing every IAPSS convention, the IAPSS Autumn Convention’s last day saw the 19th IAPSS General Assembly happening at the Gelderland Province’s Assembly Hall in Arnhem. Featuring over 60 individual members and ten IAPSS Member Associations, the agenda comprised the review and vote upon the IAPSS budget for the financial year 2015, a series of amendments to the IAPSS Legal Framework and the election of three new members of the IAPSS Executive Committee.
