IAPSS Latin America and the Caribbean

The region Latin America and the Caribbean is one of the largest regions under the IAPSS framework. Beginning from Mexico and extending to Argentina inclusive of all of the Caribbean.

One may think that Latin America and the Caribbean is a generally stable political region, however this is quite a wrong perception. The region has a rich political history which has been influenced by all of the major Empires of the 18th and 19th century. This history has influenced the politics of Latin America to such an extent that political activism and awareness is embedded in the social construct of each Latin American nation.

Almost all nations of Central and South America has experienced a political revolution which has shift their system of Governance from militaria to dictatorship, authoritarianism, socialism and ultimate to what is the internally recognized and accepted characteristics of democracy. Whilst holding strong to its Catholic faith, much of Latin America embraces Liberalism and are willing to take to the streets in its defense.

At present eyes are on Brazil, Nicaragua, Guatemala and Venezuela since these nations continue to exhibit volatile political characteristics resulting in mass protests, violence and mass movement of people towards the borders of the United States. Alternatively, there is much focus on Latin America as it pertains to how governments grapple with and manage their respective health systems regarding Covid19. Focus remains on Brazil where President Bolsonaro remains under heavy criticism and protests by the people and there are law-makers calling for him to be charged for crimes against humanity for his blatant refusal to recognize the existence and effect of Covid19 which has results in thousands of deaths.

The Caribbean is not without its rich political history and its blue waters are evidenced with many sunken ships, ship wrecks and treasures evident of the battle of Empires for control of the islands. Nations such as Cuba, Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Tobago have histories fit for Hollywood as it pertains to the various changing of control of islands. Haiti and Cuba are the most popular and historic of them all. Today, much of the Caribbean enjoy stable governments and progressive leadership. However, whilst the Dominican Republic has found political stability; Cuba continues to struggle in its quest for pure democracy and Haiti continues to be political volatile in light of the recent orchestrated assassination of its former President Moise. Haiti continues to be the focus on all regional and international organisations all of which continue to observe and respect its sovereignty but not without wanting to bring an end to the struggles of the Haitian people many of who continue to risk death as they journey towards the US mainland in hope for a better life.
