IAPSS statement on the Serbian student protests
IAPSS Press Team, Department of Public Relations – February 27 2025
In November 2024, Serbian students first took to the streets to protest against what they describe as government corruption and incompetence. The protests were sparked by the tragic collapse of a concrete canopy at a newly renovated train station in Novi Sad, which resulted in the deaths of 15 people and numerous injuries. Regarded as the most significant student-led protest in Europe since 1968, the demonstrators are unwavering in their demand for justice and calls for accountability. Determined not to be ignored, students have been on the frontlines in protest since the incident occurred with almost all major higher education institutions in Serbia participating in the peaceful protests. It is however deeply unfortunate that, despite their non-violent approach, there were incidents where students were attacked whilst in protest. Despite this, the demonstrations which are characterised by students occupying and blockading campuses and mass gatherings across the country continue to gain momentum and steadily increasing global attention and support.
The International Association of Political Science Students (IAPSS) acknowledges and supports the bravery and determination of the Serbian people, especially the students and the entire higher education community, who are taking on the difficult challenge of fighting for a better country and the change they seek. The association also hopes for an amicable end to the protests and the resumption of uninterrupted academic activities.
